Because no one planned for this.

Helping Albertans Toward Recovery

With income supports and temporary mortgage deferrals tapering off and expiring this fall, the economic fallout of Covid-19 will create an enormous wave of secured and unsecured consumer debt defaults and foreclosures. Stakeholders across the legal community have worked together to expand legal services and increase the number of trained lawyers available to help.

A volunteer-led project.

Online Legal information

Debt Negotiation Service

Consumers can use this new legal information website Help With Debt Alberta hosted by Centre for Public Legal Education Alberta to self-educate, avoid scams, and find reliable services.

Summary Advice Clinics

Consumers can get summary advice from volunteer lawyers at a Calgary Legal Guidance clinic.
For those who need legal advice about the processes that apply to them and help dealing with creditors, including mortgage lenders, UCalgary Law's Consumer Debt Negotiation Project can help.

Help for Court Hearings

Pro Bono Law Alberta offers online court-centred services for assistance with small claims and Court of Queen's Bench Matters.
Albertans struggling with debt need legal advice and information today. Alberta's legal community saw that need and responded.
